Illumination Counselling & Psychotherapy

Illumination Counselling and Psychotherapy offers a warm, welcoming confidential space, where you will be met in an inclusive and ethical way. I understand the most difficult step can often be making the decision to undertake counselling or psychotherapy, and the first conversation is often the hardest, therefore I will provide you with a safe and accepting place, to enable you to build a trusting relationship, encouraging you to explore and reflect on the issues which concern you.

Qualified Person-Centred Counsellor

My name is Jackie Poppleton. I am a qualified Person-Centred Counsellor and Psychotherapist working with adults over the age of 16. I offer counselling and Psychotherapy within Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire, and offer a respectful, confidential and non-judgemental way of being. I will support you by walking alongside you as you travel your journey of self discovery and acceptance, enabling you to work towards your goals by exploring and reflecting on the experiences you bring. I believe that each person has their own unique understanding of the world which outlines their responses and feelings about themselves. I endeavour to listen with care and insight, empowering and motivating you to find your own coping solutions, moving forward by examining your choices on how you can respond to the world.
“When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity, then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance, provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another” (Carl Rogers 1902 – 1987)

Psychotherapy & Counselling

What is the Person-Centred counselling approach?

Person-Centred counselling is a collaborative process and has at its very core, a solid belief that everyone has the ability to nurture their own personal growth and work towards their own individual potential, allowing them to discover and develop their own strengths and individual uniqueness, at a pace that suits them. The counsellor facilitates a non judgemental safe space, enabling the client to bring to counselling what they feel comfortable sharing, encouraging personal fulfilment and potential to be explored. The counsellor will not advise or tell the client what to do, but instead supports them to explore and make sense of their life experiences.

Counselling is a shorter term engagement, offered in a safe and confidential relationship where the counsellor enables the individual, encouraging an advancement in emotional wellbeing and an insight into who they really are.
Counselling supports various issues, including anxiety, depression, grief, loss, addictions, anger, sexuality and relationship problems. It can improve listening and communication skills as well as increasing confidence and self acceptance, empowering individuals to deal with problems as they arise.

Psychotherapy also focuses on the relationship, supporting the whole person in a safe and confidential environment, encouraging the clients awareness of conscious and unconscious aspects of mental, emotional, social, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Psychotherapy can take the form of short or long term engagement, this is subject to the individuals’ experiences. Psychotherapy motivates the individual to start their personal journey of inner healing and growth, which can result in significant changes, improving the value of their life and enabling the individual to reach their full potential, in their own way.

When working with Zoom, you can if you wish, choose to work only with audio therefore no webcam / camera would be necessary. A robust, reliable internet connection is required for online sessions, but I will always discuss another form of communication with you, in case we are disconnected during a session.

Some clients like to use headphones, during telephone and online sessions, as this can offer them additional confidentiality.

It is understandable that you may initially experience concerns about Online or telephone therapy, but studies report that online and telephone therapy can be as effective as face to face therapy, and offer the benefits of:

• Therapy from your own confidential space at a time that suits you.
• Sessions can continue during adverse weather conditions or illness, encouraging consistency.
• An alternative for individuals who experience limitations of leaving home.

"I felt at ease and was not pushed into talking about anything that I didn’t want to talk about. Jackie has a gentle, calm way about her."

"After each appointment I felt I came away with more clarity around what was going on for me. I had more trust in myself and started to realise what was important to me. I am glad I had the courage to speak to Jackie and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her."

"Being able to talk without feeling dismissed made me feel accepted and understood, something I had not experience many times in my life, as I had always felt people judged me and that no one wanted to listen to me. Counselling has helped my confidence grow and I am feeling more relaxed around people. I am starting to like myself."

"I would never have believed that being given time to talk about my feelings could help me start to see what had been holding me back. I am better at making decisions. I am grateful to Jackie for this opportunity."

"I have been bullied at work for a long time now, Jackie hasn’t told me what she thinks, but helped me look at what choices I have to turn things around for myself. My anxiety is reducing and I am beginning to feel better about who I am."

"You have been so patient with me especially when I didn’t know what I was trying to say, or how I really felt, by being there for me, I am more able to cope with life."
